Quality

The past couple of weeks I’ve had a few conversations about quality. There have been times I’ve been in involved with projects where this hasn’t been thought about enough. However when asked people agree yes quality is important.

And then I ask them, “so what exactly do you mean by quality?”

And all goes quiet. For a very long time.

And then they admit that really, they don’t know. Now if you don’t know what you mean by it, how can you assure it has a place and a priority in what you do?

I also spoke to someone recently who surprised me by coming straight back with this amazing definition,
“It’s someone at the top of their game who can communicate their enthusiasm so clearly that whoever they’re working with gets that same level of enthusiasm themself.” I liked it.

Another one someone responded with after thinking it over during our meeting decided for her it meant fitness for purpose. I think that’s a good start but it has gaps for me and needs fleshing out a bit more.

I’ve been thinking about it on and off in detail for about three years now and so far have arrived at:

Ambitious vision + integrity + attention to detail

How do you define quality?
And how do you know what it looks like so clearly that you can plan it in to your work, rather than just identifying examples of it after the event?
