ODD THINGS I DO FOR WORK
There are some things I find myself undertaking as part of a particular contract that stop me in my tracks to ask ‘how on earth did I end up doing this?’ Not in a bad way, just a very unexpected one.
One major example was a couple of weeks ago when I found myself talking to someone about a workshop on pathology and autopsies, so that I could talk to others about that workshop. There were details I have actively shied away from forever. And images of children handling autopsy tools. It was all in very good taste and for a good reason. But when you come from an art and design history background, the ins and outs of autopsies isn’t something you foresee being any part of your career. Still, we live and learn!
And the second such example is today, when at 9am I find myself cooking samosas for design and marketing professionals. Most odd, I barely cook at the best of times. However this afternoon sees the culmination of a project working with young people who have been creating an ‘ambient media’ or ‘guerilla marketing’ pitch to promote a forthcoming film festival at The Whitworth Art Gallery. A great team of industry desigers and PR experts have helped their progress way beyond all our expectations. So this afternoon we have the competitive pitches accompanied by refreshments. Which for some reason have led to me cooking samosas as nibbles.
It’s that kind of variety that really highlights why I love freelance work.
